City of Alexandria Holds 11th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony to Honor 67 Alexandrians KIA/MIA in the Vietnam War

City of Alexandria Holds 11th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony to Honor 67 Alexandrians KIA/MIA in the Vietnam War

The “Friends of Captain Rocky Versace” invite the public to the 11th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Captain Rocky Versace Plaza and Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial at11 a.m. on Monday, May 27 at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center at 2701 Commonwealth Ave. The event will honor the 67 Alexandrians who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War.

The Program will include reading the names of the 67 heroes, a Tribute to Capt. Rocky Versace written by his fellow POW, COL James N. "Nick" Rowe (USMA 1960), guest speakers, a wreath laying, playing of "Taps" and the singing of "God Bless America," by Virginia’s Ms. Outstanding Teen, Andolyn Medina.

The Captain Rocky Versace Plaza and Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center is dedicated to Captain Rocky Versace and the 66 other men who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War. The Memorial is an ongoing tribute, not just to the 67 listed on the benches, but to all Alexandrians who served in America’s longest war. The Versace Memorial was dedicated on July 6, 2002 and the Medal of Honor was posthumously presented to the Versace family at the White House two days later.

New Guidelines Released 

The Department has released Guidelines for the upcoming Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday.  

The holiday is a recurring, seven-day event beginning each year on May 25 and ending on May 31.  During the holiday, portable generators with a selling price of $1,000 or less per item, and other hurricane preparedness items, including, for example, batteries, bottled water, flashlights, and weather band radios with a sales price of $60 or less per item may be purchased exempt of the Retail Sales and Use Tax.

Memorial Day Jazz Festival


City of Alexandria Hosts 36th Annual Memorial Day Jazz Festival
Monday, May 27 on the City’s Waterfront
For Immediate Release: May 13, 2013

The City of Alexandria will host the 36th Annual Memorial Day Jazz Festival on Monday, May 27, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Waterfront Park, 1A Prince St. In case of inclement weather, the festival will be relocated to the Lee Center’s Kauffman Auditorium, 1108 Jefferson St. Admission is free.

The performance schedule is as follows:
  • 1 p.m. – The Commodores
    The Commodores are a specialty unit of the United States Navy Band in Washington, D. C., and features 18 of the Navy’s top jazz and “big band” musicians.
  • 2 p.m. – Al Williams Al is an Alexandria favorite and 4-time WAMMIE Award winner, including Best Jazz Instrumentalist. Al has appeared at many jazz festivals around the world.
  • 3 p.m. – Daniel Ori Daniel is a prominent young voice in the New York contemporary Jazz scene, and has performed worldwide in venues and festivals. Daniel’s music has been described as fresh, communicative, lyrical and rhythmic modern jazz with Middle Eastern, Latin and African influences.
  • 4 p.m. – Emy Tseng Emy sings with some of DC’s best jazz and Brazilian musicians and performs throughout the DC area and is noted for her Brazilian sound and feel.
  • 5 p.m. – Bob Gibson Big Band The Bob Gibson Big Band, composed of various area musicians, including members of Armed Forces Service ensembles, performs a variety of swing and big band pieces in the 40’s style that may just make the audience get up and dance.
Waterfront Park features grass seating, and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Food, such as barbeque, fried chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers, snow cones and funnel cake are available for purchase, but everyone is welcome to pack a picnic lunch or dinner. Grilling and alcoholic beverages are not permitted. Please be mindful of your neighbors and refrain from smoking at this event, and pets should be left at home.

Visitors are encouraged to take the Metro Yellow or Blue lines to the King Street Station in Old Town and take the King Street Trolley, take DASH or Metro buses, or park in one of the convenient parking garages or lots. National Police Week Fundraisers in Alexandria!

For National Police Week: 

Pork Barrel BBQ will donate 15% of your purchase to the Alexandria Police Memorial Fund on Tuesday, May 14th.  They are open from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and are located at 2312 Mt. Vernon Ave. (corner of Mt. Vernon Ave. and Oxford St in Del Ray) 

All you have to do is mention "National Police Week" when ordering! 

And don't forget that if you dine at Holy Cow (next door) they donate 25 cents for every burger ordered if you mention 007. 

Also T.J. Stones located at 608 Montgomery St in North Old Town will be collecting donations from Sunday, May 12th to Friday, May 18th for the Alexandria Police Memorial.  During Police Week, they have a LEOMF banner hanging outside and get a large turnout from law enforcement officers from all over the country that dine there .
