2012 Alex Arts Awards to be presented at City Council Meeting Tuesday, April 24

For Immediate Release: April 13, 2012

2012 Alex Arts Awards to be presented at City Council Meeting Tuesday, April 24

At the April 24 Alexandria City Council meeting, the Honorable Mayor, members of City Council and the Commission for the Arts will present three 2012 Alex Arts Awards.  The presentation will be made in the City Council Chambers, City Hall, 301 King Street at 7 pm. The annual Alex Arts Awards, presented by the Alexandria Commission for the Arts, recognize Alexandria citizens or organizations that have made extraordinary contributions to Alexandria’s vibrant arts community and cultural life.
The 2012 Alex Arts Award winners are the Ulysses S. James, Music Director, Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic, the Little Theatre of Alexandria and Leah Valtin-Erwin, Senior, TC Williams High School.
Ulysses S. James, Music Director, Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic is known for his innovative musical programming and performance of new, accessible works. He initiated a summer chamber music series at the Lyceum in Alexandria that will celebrate its 20th consecutive year this summer. In 1984, the Washington Metropolitan Youth Orchestra was a small non-auditioned group of string players; it now has 60 auditioned members from across the metropolitan area. Known as “Ul” to many, he volunteers his time and energy in support of the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic and its associated youth orchestra.  Ul also chairs the Alexandria Arts Forum, a coalition of area artists and arts administrators, advocates, and patrons who work together to advance the arts in Alexandria.  In this role, he has forged stronger partnerships with the Alexandria Convention and Visitors Association, the Office of the Arts, and the Alexandria Commission for the Arts.
The Little Theatre of Alexandria is the oldest community theatre in the Washington metropolitan area, begun in 1934 as a small play-reading group. Since then, it has staged more than 350 full productions. Productions have garnered many awards, including the Ruby Griffith and WATCH (Washington Area Theatre Community Honors) awards, and received 43 WATCH nominations this past year. In addition to its productions, the theatre’s programming includes: two sessions of theatre classes; a children’s summer camp; a One-Act Playwriting competition; and PAN (Partners in Art Night), an opportunity for organizations or businesses to partner with the Little Theatre for a specific performance as a fund-raising resource, a membership activity, or expression of appreciation for clients and employees.
Leah Valtin-Erwin, a senior at TC Williams High School, is a life-long resident of Alexandria.  She has studied dance locally (with the Choreographers Collaboration Project and The Ballet Studio, both in Del Ray) since 1998.  When TC Williams High School was renovated, the school gained a beautiful dance studio—but no dance program. Responding to this unmet need, Leah founded the Modern Dance Society at TC Williams.  The company offers free classes after school to all TC Williams students, regardless of prior experience or training.  The company focuses on improvisation, partnering, and incorporating other styles into a modern dance curriculum. Through this program, Leah has introduced the entire TC Williams community to the world of modern dance.
Mayor William D. Euille will present the 2012 Alex Arts Awards recipients with a beautiful ceramic window bowl created by Karin Abromaitis.  The recipients will also receive a brass star created and donated by David Martin of Gold Works. The Alexandria Commission for the Arts and Office of the Arts are pleased to recognize Ulysses S. James, the Little Theatre of Alexandria and Leah Valtin-Erwin for their contributions to our community and for inspiring others to do the same.

Fundraiser Dinner at Fuddruckers 4/13

Enjoy dinner at Fuddruckers (4141 Duke Street) TOMORROW, April 13th from 5 - 9pm to help save the Northern Virginia Training Center.

Northern VA Training Center is a residential training and therapeutic facility for individuals with intellectual / developmental disabilities that provides these individuals an enjoyable and fulfilling life.

The Commonwealth of Virginia made an agreement with DOJ to close 4 of the 5 training centers by 2020.  NVTC is scheduled to close by 2015.
If shut down, these individuals do not have a place to go. Some are severly disabled and doing this would only create more problems for them and our community. There are many benefits to keeping this facility open and is even a cost savings to our community. There are issues that have not been properly addressed and the staff, residents, family members and others are very concerned that these residents will lose their home.

A percentage of the sales will be donated to helping NVTC keep its doors open.  Donations are also accepted to help with the legal costs of fighting for the rights of these individuals.  More information can be found at: www.parentsandassociatesnvtc.com

Movie - "Love Free or Die: How the Bishop of New Hampshire is Changing the World,"

FROM NEIGHBORHOOD LISTSERV:

Historic Christ Church, in Old Town, is hosting a free screening of "Love Free or Die: How the Bishop of New Hampshire is Changing the World," a 2012 Sundance Film Festival Award Winner (U.S. Documentary Special Jury Prize for an Agent of Change) on April 22 at 6:15 pm in the Christ Church Auditorium, 118 North Washington St, Alexandria VA

LOVE FREE OR DIE is about a man whose two defining passions are in direct conflict: his love for God and for his partner Mark. Gene Robinson is the first openly gay person to become a bishop in the historic traditions of Christendom. His consecration in 2003, to which he wore a bullet-proof vest, caused an international stir, and he has lived with death threats every day since. LOVE FREE OR DIE follows Robinson from small-town churches in the New Hampshire North Country to Washington's Lincoln Memorial to London's Lambeth Palace, as he calls for all to stand for equality – inspiring bishops, priests and ordinary folk to come out from the shadows and change history.

Please join us for pizza, the movie, and a discussion. The evening is free, but donations are welcome and RSVPs are required. Questions and RSVPs can be directed to Melissa Capers, mcapers@rocketmail.com or 703-549-2171

Autism Resources Forum

FROM LEARNING RX in TYSONS CORNER:

Dear Local Autism Support Organization,

Our center is sponsoring a community-wide Autism Resources Forum on May 12th to introduce families impacted by autism to the life-changing resources available to them in their own backyard.

At this event, we’ll be featuring a number of local organizations that provide care or resources to the autism community, and we’d love to feature your group.

We’re anticipating great media coverage and turnout, especially since our keynote speakers will be “The Biggest Loser” stars Phil and Amy Parham, who lost more than 250 pounds on the reality TV show. As Phil and Amy shared with millions who watched their “Biggest Loser” journey, they are the parents of an autistic child. In fact, they say that the stress and pain of autism’s impact on their family helped make them fat as they turned to food for comfort.

The Parhams are entertaining and engaging speakers, and families who hear their story not only identify with their experiences, they get plenty of practical information and insights as well.

We also want families and professionals attending to hear about what you do. At this event:
  • You’ll be invited to give a three-minute presentation about your services
  • You’ll have the opportunity to distribute handouts and brochures, including having an information table for your materials
  • Your organization will be mentioned in local media coverage

If you’d like to be a part of this exciting and informative evening with families in our community, can you let me know as soon as possible? Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis, so I need to know soon if you’re planning on joining us.

As soon as I hear back from you, I’ll send  you a promo-packet you can use to let your staff, clients and contacts know your organization is being featured at this high profile event, and invite them to attend.

As you well know, autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in America and, as a spectrum-disorder, it impacts individuals and their families very differently. Families dealing with autism need every resource they can get to help them manage and improve their lives.

We couldn’t be more excited about partnering with other groups in our city to let families know that help and hope is out there!

I’m very much looking forward to partnering with you.

Sincerely,
Kathryn McHale

More Information

alexandriava.gov/Recreation
The City of Alexandria will observe the Days of Remembrance, Yom HaShoah, for the victims of the Holocaust at noon on Tuesday, April 17, 2012, in Market Square, 301 King Street. The Alexandria City Council hosts the annual ceremony as part of the weeklong commemoration of the national Days of Remembrance, Sunday, April 15, through Sunday, April 22. This is the 25th consecutive year that the City has held the Days of Remembrance ceremony. The event is free and open to the public. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the Vola Lawson Lobby on the first floor of City Hall, 301 King St. (on the Cameron St. side of the building).

The guest speaker for the ceremony will be Hans Peter Manz, current Ambassador of Austria to the United States. Ambassador Manz has represented Austria in the United States since December 2011. He arrived in Washington D.C. having served as Austrian Ambassador to Switzerland for more than four years.

During the ceremony, Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille and City Council members will light a candelabrum that Holocaust survivor Charlene Schiff and her husband, Ed, donated to the City. The 54-inch high solid brass candelabrum was given to the City in memory of Charlene Schiff’s parents, sister, and the six million Jews and millions of others who perished in the Holocaust.

The Schiff candelabrum, under the care of the City’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, is made available to schools and civic groups studying the Holocaust and to the City’s annual observance of the Days of Remembrance.

The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, in accordance with its Congressional mandate (Public Law 96-388, 10/7/80), is leading the nation in the weeklong Days of Remembrance commemoration.

The City of Alexandria is committed to compliance with the City’s Human Rights Code and Americans with Disabilities Act.
