Deadline to Register and Update Virginia Voter Registrations: May 21

On Tuesday, June 12, there will be a Democratic Primary for U.S. House of Representatives and Alexandria City Council and a Republican Primary for U.S. Senate. There is no party registration in Virginia; however, voters may only vote in one primary and are required to express their political party ballot choice.
The legal deadline to register to vote in the June 12 primaries is Monday, May 21 at 5 p.m.Voter Registration applications submitted by mail must be postmarked on or before May 21. The same deadlines are in effect for Virginia voters who are registered, but have moved within the City of Alexandria, or within Virginia. Voters who do not update their registration records before the May 21 deadline risk being ineligible to vote in these primaries.

Voter cards for new or transferred registrants will be mailed within one week of the registration date.
Checking Registration
Alexandria voters who are not certain if they are registered at their current address may go toalexandriava.gov/Elections and click “Am I Registered and Where do I Vote?” or call the Alexandria Office of Voter Registration at 703.746.4050.
New Registrations
The Alexandria Office of Voter Registration offers the following voter registration methods:
- Complete the application online at alexandriava.gov/Elections, print it out, sign it and mail it to the Alexandria Office of Voter Registration, 132 N. Royal St., Suite 100, Alexandria, VA 22314. Applications must be postmarked on or before May 21.
- Pick up an application at Alexandria Libraries or the City’s Community Relations Office (Room 1900 at City Hall).
- Register in person at the Alexandria Office of Voter Registration or at Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles Customer Service Centers.
Address Updates
Virginia registered voters who need to update their addresses may:
- Complete the form on the back of their old Voter I.D. card and mail or fax it to the Alexandria Office of Voter Registration; or,
- Complete a new voter registration application and mail or fax it to the Alexandria Office of Voter Registration. The Office of Voter Registration FAX number is 703.838.6449.
Absentee Voting
Absentee voting is now in progress. Visit alexandriava.gov/Elections or call 703.746.4050 for information on absentee voting and other election information, including sample ballots and precinct information.
New Voting Equipment
Beginning with the June primary, voters in Alexandria will be able to use the new eScan paper ballot voting system—it’s accurate, secure and easy to use. In addition, Alexandria will still have an accessible eSlate voting machine in every precinct (with headphones) to ensure that all Alexandria voters can vote privately and independently.
