ADA Walkway Construction Begins at Fort Ward
Fort Ward Museum and Historic Site is making history more accessible to visitors! A public walkway which meets the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act is being constructed through part of the historic fort in an effort to make the site more accessible to a variety of audiences. The project is being funded by a Save America’s Treasures grant and the City of Alexandria.
In preparation for the project, preliminary investigation was conducted by Alexandria Archaeology to determine that there would be no adverse impact to the historic site, and the project was approved by Federal and State historic preservation reviewers. The material selected, Flexi-Pave, has a recycled rubber matrix that is eco-friendly and meets ADA standards. The color and texture of the path will suggest compacted gravel walkways that were constructed in some forts in the Civil War Defenses of Washington.
Much of the historic site will be closed to the public during this construction project, which begins September 8 and is expected to take about one month to complete. Fort Ward Museum will remain open to the public during this time. Park patrons are also advised that the parking lot at the entrance to Fort Ward Park will be closed to public parking beginning September 8 in conjunction with the construction project. Public parking will be available in other lots in Fort Ward Park.
Any inquiries about the historic site walkway project may be directed to Fort Ward Museum at 703-746-4848.
