A T.C. chemistry teacher, Erin Strimple-Barker, is seeking mentors to pair with honors science students to work on their science fair projects. All Honors Science students at TCW are required to participate in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) (https://www. societyforscience.org/intel- international-science-and- engineering-fair). Ms. Strimple-Barker hopes to link students with members of the community in order to help with their projects.
Students begin working on their projects at the start of the school year and finish in early February when they present their projects to a panel of judges. Mentors will help students select age appropriate projects with measurable variables and appropriate scientific units, design a safe and effective experiment, and analyze and draw conclusions that relate back to or enhance published research.
If you are interested in participating in this pilot program, please contact Ms. Strimple-Barker at erin.strimple-barker@acps.k12.va.us by August 11. Also, please review the process for becoming an ACPS volunteer at http://www.acps.k12.va.us/ getinvolved/volunteer/.
An information session is scheduled for August 18 at Alexandria City Public Schools Central Office located at 1340 Braddock Place, Alexandria, VA 22314.
