FROM THE CITY OF ALEXANDRIA:
On Tuesday, August 7, from 5 to 10 p.m., the Alexandria Police Department, Fire Department, Sheriff's Office and other City agencies will partner to celebrate the 35th annual National Night Out. This special celebration is part of a nationwide crime and drug prevention effort sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW).
To heighten awareness of crime prevention, residents in more than 30 Alexandria neighborhoods will turn on their porch lights, host neighborhood cookouts and sponsor block parties in support of National Night Out. Members of City Council, City Manager Mark Jinks, Police Chief Michael Brown, Fire Chief Robert Dubé, Sheriff Dana Lawhorne, other City officials, and public safety personnel will reaffirm the City's commitment to keeping the Alexandria community safe and secure.
The Alexandria Police Department's K-9 Unit, Motor Unit, Bike Patrol, Command Bus, Armored Personnel Carrier, and Crime Scene Mobile Lab will tour neighborhoods and offer special demonstrations, and Alexandria Fire Department engines and fire trucks will come to various neighborhoods throughout the city.
National Night Out, a year-round community campaign, is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness; generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and law enforcement community partnerships; and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
