VDOT Meeting on Access Ramp from 395 to Seminary Road

VDOT's invitation to the meeting on August 25: 

Interstate 395 is the most heavily traveled highway in the Washington, D.C. region and the
stretch of highway at Seminary Road carries more than 200,000 vehicles per day. To provide
easier and safer access, VDOT’s I-395 HOV Ramp project will:
1. Build a new reversible HOV ramp to Seminary Road flyover level;
2. Extend the auxiliary access lane on northbound I-395 from Duke Street to Seminary Road;
3. Widen the Seminary Road exit ramp from northbound I-395 to Seminary Road rotary level;
4. Construct a new pedestrian bridge adjacent to Seminary Road [Nan's note:  plans have yet to be shown to SHA]; and
5. Improve signing, lighting, pavement markings, drainage and technologies that move traffic.
Join us to learn about:
· The current status of construction, the overall schedule and upcoming milestones;
· What you can expect in terms of construction impacts in the coming months; and
· The upcoming Seminary Road revised traffic pattern, which will place extended lane
closures on Seminary Road as needed to replace the existing superstructure and tie-in the
new HOV ramp and bridge.

A presentation will be made from 7:00 - 7:30 PM with a question and answer session
immediately following the presentation.

BRAC News Bulletin - #3

Meeting Reminder: The BRAC-133 Advisory Group will host a special meeting on September 7.  The sole purpose of this meeting is to offer information regarding the Environmental Assessment (EA) process currently underway for the proposed HOV/Transit Ramp at I-395 and Seminary Road.

The meeting will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Landmark Mall, (5801 Duke St.) in the West End Community Redevelopment Room on the second level of the Mall. The room is located next to the Sprint Kiosk. Access to this meeting room is best gained by parking on the second level of the parking deck and entering through the Macy’s Court Entrance.

Transit News:  Alexandria’s Local Motion program is advertising schedules for several new bus routes that are providing additional service to Mark Center. View new routes and schedules at http://alexandriava.gov/LocalMotion. Department of Defense employees may be able to ride free on buses by showing their Mark Center identification card. The federal government is paying 100% of these new bus route costs, as well as for additional shuttle service.

Parking District: A new daytime restricted parking district has been established for neighborhoods affected by BRAC. Approximately two-thirds of the applications requesting inclusion in the parking district have been approved. Staff continues to review the applications that have been submitted. Signage for approved blocks will be installed on or before August 30. After that date, parking restrictions will be enforced on blocks where signage is posted.

Traffic Management: Alexandria Police will implement a traffic management plan at key intersections near BRAC-133. During the morning and afternoon rush hours, police employees and sheriff’s deputies will be located at several intersections to keep traffic moving and prevent vehicle backups within intersections. The traffic management plan will begin after September 5, when schools reopen.

BRAC-133 News Bulletin:  August 8, 2011

This is the first in a series of updates on the BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure)-133 relocation underway at the Mark Center, and the City of Alexandria’s collaborative work with the Department of the Army as the Washington Headquarters Service moves to Alexandria. Employee Move-in Schedule: The BRAC-133 project will begin moving employees into the Mark Center building this week. According to the proposed schedule, approximately 2,300 employees will move in between now and September 15, 2011; 2,500 employees between September 15, 2011 and December 31, 2011; and 1,600 employees by December 31, 2012. While the Department of Defense will not release the actual week-by-week planned move-in numbers, it is likely that the employee move-in will be conducted in relatively equal weekly levels.

Transit News:  Alexandria’s DASH and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s Metro bus systems started new routes to provide additional service to Mark Center. DASH is adding a new express route providing service from the King Street Metro directly to Mark Center. Metro will add service between the Pentagon and Mark Center, and some Department of Defense employees may be able to ride free by showing their Mark Center identification card. The federal government is paying 100% of these new bus route costs, as well as for additional shuttle service.

Emergency Management: To train for public safety and emergency response at the Mark Center building, the City has been invited to participate in a Pentagon senior policy level exercise series and is making plans for an internal exercise. The exercises will focus on 1) incident command and control, and 2) understanding the emergency operations center interface for large scale incidents.

VDOT Mark Center Task Force: Today, Governor Bob McDonnell announced that the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will establish a new task force and implement a traffic management plan to closely monitor traffic impacts, help manage delays and coordinate increased transit service near the Mark Center. Alexandria will have representatives participating on the new task force.
