Police Celebrate 32nd Annual National Night Out

On Tuesday, August 4, from 5:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M., City officials will partner with Alexandria Police to celebrate the 32nd Annual National Night Out.  The special celebration is part of a nationwide crime and drug prevention effort sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW).

To heighten awareness of crime prevention, residents in more than 30 Alexandria neighborhoods will turn on their porch lights, host neighborhood cook-outs and sponsor block parties in support of National Night Out. Mayor William D. Euille, City Manager Mark Jinks, members of City Council, and Chief of Police Earl L. Cook will reaffirm the City’s commitment to fighting crime by visiting residents throughout the City. 

McGruff the Crime Fighting Dog, K-9 Unit, Motor Unit, Bike Patrol, Command Bus, Armored Personnel Carrier, and the Crime Scene Mobile Lab will tour neighborhoods and offer special demonstrations. 

National Night Out, a year-long community building campaign, is designed to:

• Heighten crime prevention awareness; 
• Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs; 
• Strengthen neighborhood spirit and law enforcement-community partnerships; 
• Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. 

“National Night Out is an great opportunity for the Alexandria Police Department to strengthen our existing relationships, forge new relationships with the community, and thank the residents for their vigilance and their dedication to keeping Alexandria a safe place to live, work and visit,” says Chief Cook.

Volunteers Needed For National Night Out on 8/4

Alexandria will again join communities across the country in celebration of National Night Out on Tuesday, August 4. For those who have not experienced this event, it is a fun evening where over 30 neighborhoods around the City host activities, block parties, barbeques, etc. with the goal of preventing crime by building a sense of community. 

Last year, a number of ACAP members visited neighborhoods and provided outreach regarding teen pregnancy prevention. We will partner with the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria and the Gang Prevention Task Force, forming teams, and “covering the City” with messages about our work.

Responsibilities include:

• Meeting at City Hall on August 4 at 5:30 p.m., joining a team, and receiving neighborhood assignments
• Driving to assigned neighborhood events and interacting with neighbors (tell them about your role and involvement – talking points and flyers will be provided)
• Having fun!

The time commitment will be from approximately 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Neighborhoods Celebrate National Night Out

National Night Out is Monday, August 1.  Celebrate with your neighbors at these events in Alexandria  Seminary Valley:  Polk Elementary School 6:30pm to 8:30pm.   There will be FREE professional face-painting, moon-bounce, snow cones and lots of visiting!   Don’t miss the opportunity to catch up with old (or meet new) friends!
