Fall sports tryouts start soon so it is time to get ready #1.  You must have a physical dated after May 1, 2016.  The physical and other forms are available on the T.C. Athletics Website. #2.  Register for tryouts.  See the tryout webpage. Monday (7/25/16):       Field Hockey and Golf Tuesday (7/26/16):      Football - JV and Freshman Wednesday (7/27/16):  Football - Varsity Thursday (7/28/16):     Volleyball and Cheer Friday (7/29/16):          Cross Country Registration times for each day 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. #3.  Tryouts start: August 1: Football August 1: Field Hockey            August 1: Competition Cheer August 3: Cross-country August 8: Volleyball Please share especially with any rising 8th and 9th graders you know!

Possible Phone Scam

Parents, I received an email from Greg Forbes, Director of School Counseling, regarding a phone scam where the caller identifies himself as a "TC counselor" and says he can offer the student a reduced fee for a SAT prep class.  The TC counseling department does NOT make any such calls and you should NOT give out any personal or financial information.

A Letter from the Principal of TC Williams

Dear Parents and Guardians, The senior prom was held last evening at the Army Navy Country Club. The event was well planned and chaperoned by all administrators and many staff members. The students were beautifully dressed and behaved appropriately all night. However, we want to inform you of an unfortunate situation.     Traditionally, attendees are given prom favors to commemorate the event. The student prom committee and sponsors ordered what was advertised in the commercial prom favor catalog as a "dessert glass." This is the type used in some local restaurants for mini desserts. The glasses were placed in small decorative bags and displayed in the prom area. As students leave they receive one of these bags. Midway through the prom the administration viewed one of the glasses and become concerned about its appearance. Although labeled as a "dessert" glass, it looked like a "shot" glass. Since the prom was in progress and the bags were already prominently displayed we felt it better to allow their distribution. The dismantling of the bags would have been both disruptive and time consuming. However, we want to be sure that students and parents understand that it no way does T.C. Williams High School condone underage drinking. In fact, the exact opposite is true. Prior to the prom a serious meeting outlining the dangers of drinking and using any controlled substance is discussed. Before being able to purchase a prom ticket, students must sign a "prom promise" where they agree not to use drugs or alcohol during prom night. Additionally, the school has and will continue to take strong disciplinary action against students who engage in the use of either illegal drugs or alcohol on school property and during school events. We regret that this prom favor in any way contributed to any other perception. You can be assured that in the future the administration will approve the selection and purchase of prom favors. We apologize for this situation and make our own prom promise that this will not happen again. We hope that this will not detract from the hard work and dedication of both the student prom committee and the class sponsors. They have worked very hard to plan all senior activities and we are grateful for their commitment to our students. Thank you for your understanding in this matter. As always, if you wish to discuss this, please don't hesitate to contact myself or another member of the administrative team.

T.C. Williams No Longer Among State's Lowest-Performing Schools

VDOE Announcement Confirms School's Exit from Priority Status

 

Alexandria, Va. - T.C. Williams High School is no longer among the lowest-performing 5 percent of Title I and Title I-eligible Virginia schools, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) announced today in a news release identifying Priority and Focus Schools for the 2013-14 school year. T.C. Williams is one of 10 that exited Priority status.

 

"This news validates the many indicators of T.C.'s progress on its road to improvement," said Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) Acting Superintendent Margaret Walsh. "I am confident that the school will continue to make great strides in student achievement."

 

VDOE designates the lowest-performing 5 percent of Title I schools as Priority schools, and another 10 percent of Title I schools are identified as Focus schools based on the achievement of historically low-performing subgroups. Jefferson-Houston School remains a Priority school for the second consecutive year.

John Adams and Patrick Henry Elementary schools are identified as Focus schools for the second consecutive year. (Focus schools retain their designation for a minimum of two years, unless they are subsequently identified as Priority schools or no longer receive federal Title I funding).

 

VDOE, under the two-year No Child Left Behind Act flexibility waivers granted in 2012 by the U.S. Department of Education, established annual measurable objectives (AMOs) for reducing proficiency gaps between students in the commonwealth's lowest-performing and highest-performing schools. These objectives in reading and mathematics have replaced the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) targets schools were previously required to meet under the federal education law. To be designated as meeting all Federal AMOs, participation and performance targets must be met for both English and mathematics for nine subgroups. All schools, excluding those with a graduating class, must meet 36 targets to receive the status "Met All Federal AMOs."

 

Eight Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) schools (George Washington 1 Middle School; Charles Barrett, Douglas MacArthur, James K. Polk, Matthew Maury and Samuel W. Tucker elementary schools; Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy; and Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology) met all 36 Federal AMOs in both English and mathematics. This represents an increase of two schools when compared with last year's results. ACPS as a division met all 18 Federal English AMOs and 17 out of 18 Federal Mathematics AMOs.

 

"It is important to consider the increased rigor of Virginia's new reading and mathematics Standards of Learning (SOL) tests before making conclusions about schools that missed annual objectives," Superintendent of Public Instruction Patricia I. Wright said in the VDOE's news release. "Virginia has raised the bar to prepare students for the realities of the 21st century. Our challenge - from the superintendent's office to the classroom - is to make sure students have the instruction and interventions they need to achieve the commonwealth's college- and career-ready expectations, regardless of who they are or where they live."

9:30am - 12:00pm 

1:30pm - 4:00pm

We start Monday, Aug. 19 in the AFTERNOON.

Congrats to TC Marching Band

TC Williams Presents "The Laramie Project"

"The Laramie Project" written by Moises Kaufman will be performed  Fridays, November 11th and 18th and Saturdays, November 12th and 19th. All shows start at 7:30pm.

Senior student, Joseph Powers, is the Student Director. Junior student, Sarah Laane is the Student Stage Manager.

There will be two "Talk Back" discussions where the audience will have a chance to talk to the Cast of the show at the conclusion of these two performances. The dates are: Saturday, November 12th and Friday, November 18th.

Tickets are $5.00 for ACPS Staff, Students, and Senior Citizens and $10.00 for Adults.

The Virginia Department of Education has adopted the Virginia's Student-Athlete Protection Act (Code of Virginia 22/1-271.5) that requires all ACPS student-athletes and their parents to complete a concussion education program annually.

To help comply with this policy, athletes and their parents may complete the program online. At the end of the online presentation you will be prompted to enter your name which will be forwarded to the athletic department to record that you have completed viewing the program online.

TC Williams Athletes to pick up eligibility cards

Students wanting to participate in Fall Sports/athletics at TC Williams can pick up their eligibility cards as follows: 

Monday and Tuesday, 8/1 & 8/2,  at 9 am 

those students participating in Cross Country and golf. 

Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday, 8/3, 8/4. 8/5, at 9 am

students participating in Cheerleading, volleyball, football and field hockey. 

AND on Wednesday 8/17, Parents are invited to attend a concussion information meeting at 7 pm.
