Volunteer Alexandria Service Day for Youth

Volunteer Alexandria is hosting our first Family & Youth Community Service Day on Saturday, May 21, 2016 to engage our youngest volunteers in service! 

We will have two projects located in the Del Ray area for two different age groups. The first will be for elementary aged children hosted at the Mount Vernon Community School. Volunteers will help pack bags that will be distributed by the USO at airports to soldiers heading overseas. Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn more about community service in Alexandria and how to remain engaged. The second project will be for high school aged volunteers. Volunteers will be assisting with landscaping and gardening for the Duncan Library and the Mount Vernon Community School. Volunteers will learn best practices will helping two community spaces look clean and put together. 4th Annual Youth Leadership Conference

On Monday, August 17, 2015, the Fourth Annual Youth Leadership Conference will kick off at First Baptist Church of Alexandria located at 2932 King St. 

The three day event is sponsored by the Alexandria Campaign on Adolescent Pregnancy (ACAP), the Substance Abuse Coalition of Alexandria (SAPCA) and T.C. Williams’ Keep It 360 and Above the Influence Clubs to train young leaders and connect them with opportunities to become more civically engaged in the Alexandria community. 

Delegate Charniele Herring of Virginia’s 46th District will open the conference that hosts community and nonprofit leaders, elected officials and representatives from several local boards and commissions. The conference is free to rising ninth through twelfth graders in Alexandria; and scheduled workshops include professionalism and networking, resume writing, becoming a community change maker, teamwork and critical thinking, budgeting and money management, and much more. 

ACAP’s mission is to prevent adolescent pregnancy through culturally and age-appropriate education, advocacy, technical assistance, direct service prevention programs and public awareness. The goal is to work collaboratively with young people, their families and the community to secure brighter futures for youth in Alexandria. 

SAPCA is an alliance of parents, youth, schools, city health and recreation agencies, media, nonprofits, businesses, policymakers and law enforcement, whose mission is to engage diverse sectors of the community in collaborative, cross-cultural and comprehensive substance abuse prevention efforts that result in a reduction of underage substance use and abuse in the city of Alexandria.
