Alexandria Police Adopt New Crime Database

RAIDSONLINE: Police Adopt New Crime Database The Alexandria Police Department is pleased to announce the implementation of RAIDSONLINE.com, a website the public can use at no cost to search for crimes reported in and around specific areas in Alexandria. The Alexandria Police Department began using a similar program, CrimeReports.com in 2008. RAIDSONLINE.com replaces the CrimeReports.com tool. RAIDSONLINE.com allows users to search for historical data as far back as January 1, 2013, while the previous reporting site would only allow the user to search the previous six months, in one month intervals. RAIDSONLINE.com is another tool that Alexandria Police Department uses to provide information about local crime to the City’s residents. The application also includes an advanced analytics dashboard which empowers the user by allowing the ability to create charts and graphs showing crime patterns relating to time of day or day of week. In addition, RAIDSONLINE.com allows users to create “hot spot” maps, an analytic layer that displays the density of criminal activity in their neighborhoods. Alexandria Police Add Two Red Light Cameras

Alexandria Police Add Two Red Light Cameras

The Alexandria Police Department has commenced using two additional cameras as part of the Red Light Photo Safety Program. The system will work the same as it has the past three years; photo enforcement cameras will capture still images and video of red-light violators. A warning period is in effect through June 30, 2014. A warning notice will be issued to the vehicle’s registered owner for any violations. There will be no fines during this warning phase. Fines will be issued for all citations starting on July 1, 2014.

The new photo-enforcement cameras are located at two intersections:

 * South Patrick Street and Gibbon Street (westbound lanes)

 * Duke Street and South Walker Street (westbound lanes)

Cameras will operate 24-hours a day and capture images of every vehicle running the red-lights at those intersections. Warning signs alerting drivers to the red-light cameras have been installed prior to the warning period.

The Alexandria Police Department’s program is administered by Redflex Traffic Systems (http://www.redflex.com). Each violation will be reviewed and approved by the Alexandria Police Department prior to being issued.

Seminary Valley Cars Broken Into

Apparently there were numerous car break-ins on Tuesday night this week -
Strathblane, Peacock, Pegram and Howard all impacted. 
Windows broken and air bags stolen. 

Police state it happens really quickly- side window smashed, they get in, pop the hood, disable the battery, steal the air bag. 
Assuming its a group of people hitting a street and driving off to the next one. 
Targeting mostly Honda's, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda. I haven't seen a police report that states the total number in the neighborhood. 
WTOP reported that 14 cars were hit in Fairlington last month. 
It's becoming an epidemic.

Rash of Thefts of Copper Downspouts

There have been reports of copper downspout thefts throughout Alexandria in recent weeks.  
The first reports were in Del Ray, then I heard about them on Stonewall, Timberbranch Parkway and now on Fontaine St.  

Apparently the majority of these thefts are happening in broad daylight, with a few reports of overnight thefts. 

Witnesses have described the suspect as a tallish (6 ft), white man with blondish hair.  
He drives a gold/gray older Camry-type car.   

The suspect detaches the downspouts and then folds them up and places them in the trunk of his car. 

Police reports have been filed and the police have been able to dust for prints.

Police Investigate Man Approaching Children

The Alexandria Police Department is investigating two recent reports of an elderly man, with an older model green Subaru wagon, approaching children. One incident occurred on January 31, and the other a week later on February 7. The first incident occurred in the 400 block of Crown View Lane while a boy was walking his dog. The second incident occurred when two boys were walking home from George Mason Elementary. In both cases, the man spoke to unaccompanied children who did not know him. No crime was committed, and the man did not try to get the children to get in his car, or go anywhere with him. He spoke with the children and then left the area.

The man in question was a white male, approximately 60-70 years old, with gray hair. He drove an older model green Subaru wagon. The man has not committed a crime but police would like to speak with him.

The children in these incidents did the right thing. They told their parents that something happened that made them feel strange. Remind your children to never walk away with a stranger or get into a car of someone they do not know.

Police Seek Public’s Help Identifying Suspects in Car Dealership Burglaries

Alexandria Police Seek Public’s Help Identifying Suspects in Car Dealership Burglaries

Alexandria Police are seeking the public’s help in identifying suspects involved in several car dealership burglaries that have occurred since February of this year.  The cases are outlined below. 

·         February 27, Jack Taylor Toyota, Attempted Burglary:  Suspect attempted to pry open a service door with a tire iron.  No entry was made to the business. 

·         March 12, Jack Taylor Toyota, Burglary:  Suspect entered business by prying a service door and removed cash from the safe. 

·         March 31, Jack Taylor Toyota, Burglary:  Suspect entered business by unknown means, pried open the safe and removed cash.

·         June 2, Jack Taylor Toyota, Burglary:  Suspect entered the business, pried open the safe and removed cash.

·         June 28, Landmark Honda, Burglary:  Two suspects hid inside the business until closing and then attempted to pry open the safe.  The suspects left without taking anything.

·         July 9, Modern Motors, Attempted Burglary:  A vehicle was seen approaching and leaving the dealership during the night.  The suspects damaged the external cameras at the business. 

·         July 14, Modern Motors, Burglary:  Two suspects entered the business through a bathroom window and removed a safe containing cash.  The suspects left through the front door of the business.  

In all the cases, it appears that there are multiple people involved in the burglaries.  Detectives believe one or two suspects function as lookouts as one or two suspects enter the business.

Alexandria Police investigate sexual assault in Rosemont

FROM THE ALEXANDRIA POLICE DEPARTMENT: 


Alexandria Police are investigating a sexual assault that occurred on Thursday, December 8, at approximately 9:10 P.M. on Little Street near the intersection with E. Maple Avenue.  A female was walking home from work when she was grabbed from behind by a man who pushed her to the ground and inappropriately touched her.  She screamed and the suspect fled on foot.  He was last seen running towards Walnut Street.  The suspect is described as an unknown race male, 25-30 years old and clean shaven.  He is approximately 5’8” to 5’10” and was wearing a dark jacket and a winter knit cap with a red stripe.

It is too early in the investigation to determine if this incident is related to a similar incident on a female jogger that occurred on Monday, November 21, at 6:00 A.M. in the 200 block of E. Del Ray Avenue.

Alexandria Police Investigate Bank Robbery

Alexandria Police Investigate Bank Robbery at BB&T Located on S. Washington Street

Alexandria Police are investigating a bank robbery that occurred at the BB&T, located at 300 S. Washington Street.  Around 10:50 A.M. on Saturday, October 29, a man entered the bank, implied a weapon and demanded money.  The teller relinquished an undisclosed amount of cash and the suspect fled the area on foot.  No one was injured.

The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 6 feet tall, weighing approximately 170 pounds.  The suspect was wearing dark pants, a dark shirt and a mask.

UPDATE:  Alexandria Police Seek Public’s Help in Identifying Person of Interest in Missing Person Case

Alexandria Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a person of interest in the missing person case of Lenwood “Lenny” Harris.  The person of interest used the victim’s credit card on King Street shortly after 1:00 A.M on September 22. 

The person of interest appears to be a black male.  He has a moustache and a small goatee.  He has a muscular build and tattoos on his right and left forearm.

Alexandria Police Roaming DWI Enforcement Results

Alexandria police conducted a roaming DWI enforcement effort to deter and apprehend intoxicated drivers from 8:30 P.M. on Friday, September 23, to 6:30 A.M. on Saturday, September 24.  Vehicles observed committing traffic infractions were stopped and drivers were checked to assure that their abilities to drive had not been impaired by alcohol or drugs.

During the roaming enforcement effort, 43 vehicles were stopped and three arrests were made for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI).  In addition, 30 summonses were issued for miscellaneous traffic offenses.

Seven Alexandria police officers, one Alexandria Sheriff’s deputy and one Emergency Communications Technician participated in the mobile enforcement effort.

Alexandria Police Seek Public’s Help in Locating Missing Person

Alexandria Police are asking for the public’s help in locating a man who was reported missing on September 21, 2011.  Lenwood “Lenny” Harris, 53, was last seen around 9:00 P.M. at the Charles Houston Recreation Center in the Old Town area of Alexandria.  He was driving a 1994 light blue Toyota Corolla bearing a Virginia license plate: XKG-8385.  He is believed to be endangered.  His cell phone was recovered Thursday on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and he failed to show up for a presentation at the Alexandria Adult Detention Center. 

He is described as 6’1”, 210 pounds and has dark hair and brown eyes.  He was last seen wearing a gray sweat top and gray sweat pants.

Police to Conduct Mobile DWI Checkpoint TONIGHT

Alexandria Police to Conduct Mobile DWI Checkpoint

On September 23, Alexandria police will conduct a mobile sobriety checkpoint to deter and apprehend intoxicated drivers.  The DWI crackdown will begin at 8:30 P.M. on Friday, September 23, and will continue until 6:30 A.M. on Saturday, September 24.  Motorists will be stopped and drivers will be checked to assure that their abilities to drive have not been impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Chief of Police Earl L. Cook reminds drivers that the maximum penalty in Virginia for the first conviction for driving under the influence is 12 months in jail, a $2,500 fine and a 12-month suspension of driving privileges. In addition, there are mandatory jail terms associated with these offenses, depending upon the blood alcohol content of the driver. Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles administrative fees may apply as well.

Alexandria Police Sobriety Checkpoint Results

Alexandria police conducted a sobriety checkpoint in the 5700 block of Duke Street to deter and apprehend intoxicated drivers from 10:00 P.M. on Saturday, July 16, to 6:00 A.M. on Sunday, July 17. Vehicles were stopped and drivers were checked to assure that their abilities to drive had not been impaired by alcohol or drugs.

During the checkpoint, two arrests were made for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) and 13 summonses were issued for miscellaneous traffic offenses.

Six Alexandria police officers, two parking enforcement officers, one emergency communications technician and two Alexandria Sheriff’s deputies participated in the checkpoint
