Getting Ready for School Part 3

Things your child may be worried about~~~
Talk to your child about these things, walk through their day and let them how everything will work. Get them prepared before they have a chance to get too anxious.
How will I get to school? (riding a bus or carpool)
Explain the route (picking up other children), how they will get off the bus and get into the school and to their classroom.
Make sure they know how to act on the bus or in the car.
What if I miss you?
Let your child know that it’s ok to miss you. You will miss them too! You are both doing your job – their job is to go to school just like mommy and daddy have to go to work. (Or mommy has to go to the grocery store or clean the house). Everyone has a job to do and their “job” is to go to school and have fun!

New!  College and Career Center Volunteers

The PTSA is recruiting parent volunteers to help in the College & Career Center.  For the past 2 years parent volunteers have volunteered during the lunch hours and after school to help Patricia Braun and her staff work with students, mostly seniors, with the college information and application process.  No experience necessary!  Mrs. Braun will offer an orientation for new volunteers.    Parents will also be called upon for assistance during the evening informational programs during the upcoming months.  Please contact Nancy Carver at tccareercentervols@gmail.com to sign up or for further information.

New!  Bus routes

For security reasons, school bus routes will no longer be posted on the ACPS Web page. Letters will be sent home via students' back-to-school packets. Ninety-five percent of this year's bus routes feature the same buses, drivers, stops and times as last year's routes. Bus routes for special education students include changes, about which parents will receive notification from their children's schools. For additional information, contact the Pupil Transportation Office at 703-461-4169.

New!  Online tool for cafeteria

There is a new online tool for managing cafeteria money:parentonline.net. This replaces cafeprepay, and is available now. To register you must have your children's student ID, which is NOT the same as the PIN. The student ID is more secure. This number is located on your child's report card or on a secondary student's schedule. You may also email us (becky.domokos-bays@acps.k12.va.us) to request the information. Parentonline will provide more detailed information such as balances, purchases, etc.

New!  Marching Titans Color Guard

It's not too late to join the Marching Titans, especially if you are interested in being a member of the Color Guard. Marching Band Camp continues this week, 8am-4:30pm starting in the band room (get the full schedule on the Band Booster web site Calendar page)We really need Color Guard members--you can't be a great band without Guard. And with a Cirque de Soleil show theme, Color Guard is really important! You don't have to play an instrument to be in Guard; you don't need experience marching or twirling things--you'll have a chance to learn all you need to know. And you get to hang out with the band and go on those bus rides to away games and other great stuff!

Fall Crew

FROM THE ALEXANDRIA CREW BOOSTERS:

My name is Pat Marquardt. I'm the ACB Fall Crew organizer and the TCW freshmen girls' coach in the spring. With school year quickly approaching I wanted to introduce myself and give everyone some information on the Fall Crew program. Fall Crew is a fantastic way for novice rowers to improve their water skills. While we advertise the program as novice "learn-to-row" the program is a continuation from the summer. For experienced kids, we pick up where they left off at the end of the summer program. If your child is thinking about spring crew this is a good opportunity to get a head start. Here are the important dates:

Sat Sep 8 - Registration at the boathouse from 8-10am and swim test at 1pm (Old Town Pool on Cameron St.)
Mon Sep 10 - First day of practice

Practices will be Mon, Wed, and Fri from 4:15-6:15. ACPS kids are able to use the school buses to get from school to the boathouse; however, there are no school buses home after practice.

Lastly, please spread the word to any potential new rowers. Fall Crew is for 8th-12th graders and is open to everyone so non-ACPS kids are welcome to sign up! Feel free to email me with any questions.

Best,

Pat Marquardt
