Alexandria Police to Conduct Mobile DWI Enforcement



On March 14, Alexandria police will conduct a mobile DWI enforcement effort to deter and apprehend intoxicated drivers. The DWI crackdown will begin at 9:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 14, and continue until 5:00 A.M. on Sunday, March 15. Motorists will be stopped and drivers will be checked to assure that their abilities to drive have not been impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Chief of Police Earl L. Cook reminds drivers that the maximum penalty in Virginia for the first conviction for driving under the influence is 12 months in jail, a $2,500 fine and a 12-month suspension of driving privileges. In addition, there are mandatory jail terms associated with these offenses, depending upon the blood alcohol content of the driver. Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles administrative fees may apply as well.

Alexandria Police Update Death Investigation


The Alexandria Police Department is continuing the investigation into the death of a 17 year-old male that occurred March 12 in the 2800 block of Park Center Drive.  Around 7:45 a.m., the male was found deceased beside a building. 
An autopsy of the deceased was conducted this morning and the medical examiner’s ruling is pending further investigation.  At this time, the victim’s injuries are consistent with a descent from a building and no other trauma was identified.

Alexandria Police Investigating Strong Arm Robbery

The Alexandria Police Department is investigating a strong arm robbery in the 1500 block of Quantrell Avenue. Two suspects stole headphones from a single victim. There are no injuries. Expect police activity in the area.

Alexandria Police Conduct Death Investigation


The Alexandria Police Department is conducting a death investigation in the 2800 block of Park Center Drive.  
Around 7:45 a.m. on Thursday, March 12, 2015, officers responded to assist the Fire Department and medics with a person found deceased beside a building. Upon arrival, they located the victim, a 17 year-old male. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause and manner of death will be determined through an autopsy.

Alexandria Police Department honor Guard Practice

The Alexandria Police Department’s Honor Guard unit will practice firing blanks outside of headquarters on March 23rdaround 0800 hours in preparation for the memorial opening ceremony to take place on March 28th . 

Firing will consist of three volleys and will occur two or three times.  Please pass on notice of this to all whom you deem appropriate.

Alexandria Salute to Women Award Winners

Eleven to be Honored at Salute to Women Awards

Alexandria’s Commission for Women has announced the names of the honorees for its 35th Annual Salute to Women Awards. Eleven women will be recognized for their accomplishments in civic life and for the improvements they have brought to the well-being of Alexandria’s women. The awards are presented for achievement in a wide range of private and governmental pursuits, including the arts, business, service to youth, public policy, health and safety, public service and civic leadership.

The 2015 Awardees, who were selected by an independent committee appointed by the Commission, are: LaDonna Sanders (Rising Star Award), Ginny Hill-Obranovich (Making a Difference Award), Valarie Wright (Women’s Health and Safety Advocate Award), Brooksie Koopman (Susan Lowell Butler Lifetime Achievement Award), Cynthia Anderson (Maguerite Payez Leadership Award), Lorraine Friedman (Youth Community Services Award-Adult), Zauhirah Tipu (Youth Community Services Award-Youth), Suzanne Maxey (Marian Van Landingham Legislation and Public Policy Award), Joan Singer (Donna Bergheim Cultural Affairs Award), Ashley McNeff Behrens (Leadership in Business and Career Development Award) and the late Laurie Meyer (Vola Lawson Award).

The Salute to Women Awards ceremony will be held on Thursday, March 26, at the Patent and Trade Office, 600 Dulany Street, Alexandria. The reception begins at 6 p.m. and the awards ceremony is at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are $65 per person. Sponsorships and ads in the program are also available.
