Domestic Violence Program to Host Children’s Holiday Party

Every year, the Alexandria Domestic Violence Program organizes a Holiday Party for children and mothers who have been recently served by the program. At the party, the families reunite with past shelter friends and staff, eat and take pictures with Santa Clause, among other activities. Each mother and child receives a bag of gifts to wrap and place under their own tree on Christmas Day. More than 100 families look forward to this exciting event, and our community’s generosity is what makes it a success.

The 2016 Children’s Holiday Party will be held on December 17. If you would like to participate in the party this year, we have a gift suggestion list for ideas. If you wish to donate children’s toys or other gifts, please provide newly purchased, unwrapped items. We will provide each mother with wrapping paper to personalize each child’s gift.

We are also requesting for gift certificates to local stores in denominations of $25. This way, each woman will have the opportunity to purchase something special for herself or her children.

We accept donations at our main office, located at 421 King Street, Suite 400, Alexandria, VA from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.Monday through Friday, except on holidays. The deadline for delivery or pick-up of unwrapped gift donations is December 15.

If you need help deciding what to purchase, or if you have any other questions about donating for this event, please call Magdalia or Timeka at 703.746.4911. Thank you for helping to make this a great day for the children and families we serve.

Eats Place is Coming to Old Town Alexandria

FROM EATS PLACE Chef Katy:

After two years of serving our members and community in our Washington, D.C. location, EatsPlace is happy to announce our expansion to a second location in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, at the historic Torpedo Factory Art Center.

Old Town Alexandria is the perfect destination for EatsPlace's second location, with continuation of focusing on the best local foods and the vintage schoolhouse look of the original. The EatsPlace Cafe and Market at the Torpedo Factory Art Center is a quick-serve concept of eclectic sandwiches with entree salads and soups. It's a mix of healthy and decadent, which will include kimchi grilled cheese and an Asian fermented foods board. The casual spot's all-day menu also includes open faced tarts and cheese and charcuterie. The cafe will serve beer and wine.

And with EatsPlace located in the world famous Torpedo Factory Art Center, there will be project space for classes and demos. “We're thrilled to be working with the City of Alexandria to bring EatsPlace to Old Town,” said Katy Chang, chef and founder of EatsPlace. “The fact that we outgrew our original space shows what a vibrant food and creative economy we have regionally. We're very excited to continue to increase our brand and presence to champion food entrepreneurs in the DMV. We can't wait to broaden our community and be inspired by the artist community at the Torpedo Factory."

“We’re really looking forward to EatsPlace joining the Torpedo Factory,” said Diane Ruggiero, director of the office of the arts for the City of Alexandria. “Just as we’re seeking to sustain the arts in Alexandria, EatPlace is doing much the same in the culinary world. They see food as a way to bring people together and build community. They’re going to bring a whole other level of energy and engagement to the Factory.”

About EatsPlace:
EatsPlace is a neighborhood restaurant and bar, a food incubator and a restaurant accelerator.  We provide community commercial kitchen rentals and a marketplace with dining space to host pop-up guest chefs.  EatsPlace helps accelerate our members' success by providing tailored training, necessary tools and resources, and connections to the food industry.  For more information visit eatsplace.com or follow EatsPlace on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram via @EatsPlace

About the Torpedo Factory Art Center:
Founded in 1974 in an old munitions plant, the Torpedo Factory Art Center is home to the largest number of publicly accessible working artist studios in the U.S. In an effort to sustain the arts in Alexandria, the Torpedo Factory is now part of the City of Alexandria’s Office of the Arts. Just south of Washington, D.C., the Torpedo Factory Art Center overlooks the Potomac River in the Old Town section of Alexandria, Va. Each year, more than a half million national and international visitors meet and interact with more than 160 resident artists in 82 working studios and seven galleries. The Torpedo Factory Art Center is also home to The Art League, the Alexandria Archaeology Museum, and the EatsPlace Cafe and Market. For more information visit

How to "Ghost" Your Neighbors

Here is the little poem that goes along with the ghost and treat for "ghosting" your neighbors.

The phantom ghost has come to town.
to leave you some goodies, I see you've found.
If you do not wish a curse to fall
Continue this greeting.... This Phantom call.

First, post this phantom in a place where it can be seen.
And leave it there til Halloween.
This will scare other phantoms that may come.
Be sure to participate, don't be a bum!

Second, make two treats, two ghosts and two notes like this
Deliver them to two neighbors who may have been missed.

You must be quick, you have only one day.
Go to a house with no ghosts on display.
Don't let them see you, be sneaky, no doubt.
Deliver at dark, when there's not any light.
Ring the doorbell, run quickly, stay out of sight.

Last but no least, come join in the season
Be happy, be silly, you need no good reason
One last thought, remember, don't be seen.

And share the spirit of a spooky Halloween.

Stay at Home Moms

This is for all the stay at home moms.  (via a very old Ann Landers post)

One day, a man came home from work to find total chaos.  The kids were playing outside in the mud, still in their pajamas.   When he opened the door, he found an even bigger mess: empty food boxes were on the kitchen counter, dishes in the sink, dog food spilled on the floor, a broken glass under the table and a pile of sand by the back door.  The family room was strewn with toys and a lamp had been knocked over.

He headed  up the stairs, stepping over toys, to look for his wife.  He was becoming worried that she might be ill or that something terrible had happened to her.  He found her in the bedroom still in bed with her pajamas on,  reading a book.

She looked up at him, smiled and asked how his day had gone.  He looked at her, bewildered, and asked, "What happened here today?"

She again smiled and answered, "You know, every day, you com home from work and ask me what I did today"
"Yes" was his reply.
She answered, "Well, today, I didn't do it!"

An End to the Halloween Pirate Display on Russell Rd.

FROM Dana Lawhorne:

Neighborhoods are defined by traditions. Delray has many but none better than the annual Halloween pirate show at 1407 Russell Road. Earlier today, Tami (the pirate lady) called me to break the bad news. She sold her house and is moving to Florida to help her aging parents. Her voice quivered as she told me the sad news. She talked about how much she enjoyed doing this for the community, especially the kids. It gave her great joy. I think she started off with a few pirates and it grew each year. Helping her was a blast. Working on it  each year was a tradition that I looked forward to. I will miss the  thousands of people who came to see it. I will miss helping Tami do something that allowed us to think about something other than bad news. It was a great distraction. It was a reminder that no matter what, traditions go on and so do it's people. Tami never let us down. She is a wonderful person who spent all her free time and hard earned money to make us smile. She has a big heart. No surprise that she is moving to be with her parents who need her. Loyalty trumps tradition and that's ok with me. I will miss her. If you can find time, send her a card or a note to say thank-you:

Virginia Cotillion

As the summer is winding down, we wanted to reach out and let you know that The Virginia Cotillion, a dancing school for elementary and middle school children for the past 25 years, will be sending out invitations for next year and we want all your children to know they are invited to participate!  All students grades 4-7 are welcome.

If you are interested in receiving an invitation for your child, please contact us at virginiacotillion@gmail.com with your child's full name and mailing address.  And please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about cotillion.
www.thevirginiacotillion.com
Sincerely,
Anna Alberson, Maura Burchette, and Gillian Rice MaupinThe Virginia Cotillion

What the parents say:"My son has participated since the 5th grade and the only way that I learned about it at the time was through word of mouth.  I am certain that if more parents knew about it, they would enroll their children.  For me, the appeal wasn't just for my son to learn the dance skills that will surely remain with him through adulthood, but also the additional opportunity to learn and apply social etiquette.  The past three years at Cotillion have certainly contributed to his development as a fine young man." - Maureen Flanagan, mother of Aidan Beckwith

Please join us for fun dance classes! The Virginia Cotillion was established in 1990 to offer ballroom and contemporary dance instruction, as well as instruction on manners and etiquette for children. Over the course of six classes, our dance instruc- tor teaches students in 4th-7thgrade, the fundamentals of dance, including traditional favorites such as the swing, waltz, fox trot, pretzel, salsa, cha-cha and shag.
Students will also enjoy learning popular line and current dances.
We strongly believe these fundamental dances and basic etiquette will serve your children throughout their lives.  The annual fee is $300.

Alexandria Library Summer Quest Program

Start off summer with a bang at the Charles E. Beatley, Jr. Central Library – located at 5005 Duke Street – on Monday, June 27 at 2 p.m. with the SummerQuest Kick Off Party.

SummerQuest – Alexandria Library’s summer reading program for ages 0 to 5 and 6 to 12 – will host its kick off party with fun crafts, games, snacks and prizes for children.
This annual summer reading program provides learning and fun for all ages. Entertainment includes music, magic, storytelling, reading, nature shows, dancing, plays, puppet shows, movies and more!

SummerQuest is divided into three groups: SummerQuest, Jr. (Ages 0-5), SummerQuest (Ages 6-12) and Teen Summer Reading (Ages 12-18). This year’s theme is “Read for the Win!”
Most programs for the summer reading program do not require registration to attend. Scheduled events for this year’s SummerQuest programs are listed here

Research shows that the summer learning slide can be avoided by engaging children in reading and other enrichment programs over the summer.
