Help Needed for family in fatal accident in Alexandria

Taken from the neighborhood list serves:

I am sure many of you have heard about the tragic death of Brian Hernandez Chavez this past Sunday. He was only 8 years old. He and his mother were walking from thier apt to Landmark Mall in the middle of the day when a drunk driver hit them both. Brian was pronouced dead at the scene and mom is still in the hospital with almost every bone from the waist down broken. This family is in DESPERATE need of financial assistance. They need help paying for mom's medical bills (which will be in the many thousands as she will be in a wheelchair for months) and replacing her income, as well as funeral and other general expenses. PLEASE everyone click on the link and give anything you can even if it is $5. I have been working directly with the family and I know their need is great. This tragedy was so needless and the family is in pieces (of course). EVERY PENNY COUNTS!!!

Proposed changes in definition of Autism

From Social Media Moms

As a member of SocialMoms who cares about special needs, we wanted to alert you to a special media opportunity with ABC World News tonight. Please review the information below and forward this to someone you think would be interested in commenting for the program. More about the topic and the producer's request is below -- special preference will be given to people in the greater NYC area:

Proposed changes in the definition of autism would sharply reduce the skyrocketing rate at which the disorder is diagnosed and might make it harder for many people who would no longer meet the criteria to get health, educational and social services, a new analysis suggests. ABC World News is looking to hear from parents of children in the US whose children have been diagnosed with autism or a related discorder, but under the new guidelines would not be. The most likely population affected are those with a high functioning child with Aspergers.

If you would care to comment, please let the producer know where they can reach you and a bit about your views on the proposed changes. Please feel free to forward this alert to friends or followers. The deadline 1/20/2011 at 2 p.m. EST. Thanks!

Celebrate Black History Month with Paul Robeson at the Carlyle Club

February 12 Performance and Dinner Benefit Alexandria Black History Museum

Experience the true spirit of Black History Month with actor, scholar and activist Paul Robeson at the Carlyle Club in Alexandria! On Sunday, February 12, actors Hugh Staples and Michael Hill will bring Robeson to life in a special one-night performance of “Paul Robeson, A Play by Philip Dean Hayes” at the Carlyle Club (411 John Carlyle Street). A sumptuous dinner will begin at 5 p.m., followed at 7:30 p.m. by the 90-minute show. After the performance, Mr. Staples and Mr. Hill will answer questions from the audience. The snow date is Sunday, February 19.

This play, directed by Cody Jones, follows Paul Robeson (1898-1976) from his youth in New Jersey through his adult years as he traveled the world. An All-American athlete and a graduate of Columbia Law School, Robeson negotiated a complicated system of racism as he spoke out against the injustices he witnessed. Fighting for civil rights and labor causes, he triumphed in the midst of adversity that turned him into a modern-day martyr.

Tickets for the play and dinner are $65 per person. Tickets for the play only are $30 per person with limited seating in the bar. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the Carlyle Club at 703.548.8899 or by booking online at www.thecarlyleclub.com. 365 - I don't want to grow up

I won`t grow up,
----I won`t grow up
I don`t want to go to school.
----I don`t want to go to school
Just to learn to be a parent,
----Just to learn to be a parent
And recite a silly rule.
----And recite a silly rule
If growing up means
It would be beneath my dignity to climb a tree,
I`ll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up
Not me!
Not I,
Not me!
Not me!
I won`t grow up,
----I won`t grow up
I don`t want to wear a tie.
----I don`t want to wear a tie
And a serious expression
----And a serious expression
In the middle of July.
----In the middle of July
And if it means I must prepare
To shoulder burdens with a worried air,

I`ll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up
Not me,
Not I,
Not me!
So there!
Never gonna be a man,
I won`t!
Like to see somebody try
And make me.
Anyone who wants to try
And make me turn into a man,
Catch me if you can.
I won`t grow up.
Not a penny will I pinch.
I will never grow a mustache,
Or a fraction of an inch.
`Cause growing up is awfuller
Than all the awful things that ever were.
I`ll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up,
No sir,
Not I,
Not me,
So there!

I won`t grow up!
----I won`t grow up
I will never even try
----I will never even try
I will do what Peter tells me
----I will do what Peter tells me
And I`ll never ask him why
----And I`ll never ask him why

We won`t grow up!
----We won`t grow up
We will never grow a day
----We will never grow a day
And if someone tries to make it
----And if someone tries to make it
We will simply run away
----We will simply run away

I won`t grow up!
----I won`t grow up
No, I promise that I won`t
----No, I promise that I won`t
I will stay a boy forever
----I will stay a boy forever
And be banished if I don`t!
----And be banished if I don`t

And Never Land will always be
The home of youth and joy
And liberty
I`ll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up
Not me!
Not me!
Not me!
Not me!
No sir!
Not me!

Char Bah to Present Genealogy Lectures for Black History Month

FROM THE CITY OF ALEXANDRIA:

During Black History Month, discover your own family history with expert techniques for tracing African-American ancestors! Genealogist Char McCargo Bah will present two illustrated lectures at the Alexandria Black History Museum at 902 Wythe Street that will help guide family historians in their own research.

The first, on Saturday, February 4, is “Using Oral History, Censuses and Vital Statistics to Start Your Research,” a program for beginners. Participants will be introduced to key techniques in obtaining oral history from family members and learn how to use these techniques to obtain census and vital statistic information. The program runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Reservations are recommended, and the $5 admission may be paid at the door.

The second, on Saturday, February 11, is an advanced program that celebrates this year’s Black History Month theme of “Black Women in American Culture and History.” Ms. Bah will examine the family histories of four Alexandria women who were influential in the city’s African American community. Participants will discover how to apply Ms. Bah’s techniques in their own research. The program runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Reservations are recommended, and the $5 admission may be paid at the door.
These events are part of “Their Voices Can Be Heard,” Ms. Bah’s Alexandria genealogy lecture series which developed from her research into descendants of people buried at Freedmen’s Cemetery, the historic African-American burial ground reclaimed by the City in 2007. Since 2008, Ms. Bah, an Alexandria native, has located dozens of descendants of people buried at Freedmen’s Cemetery, most of whom are five and six generations removed. Many of the descendants still live in Alexandria or nearby, but were not familiar with their Civil War-era ancestors.

Char Bah has been doing genealogical research since 1981 and specializes in overcoming the unique challenges that African-American family research presents. She holds two undergraduate degrees and a certificate in legal research investigation, and her work has been featured in several magazines and newspapers. A regular columnist for the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society newsletter, she also hosts a monthly online chat on Afrigeneas.com called “A Chat with Char.” Ms. Bah is a contributing author to Everyday Grace, Everyday Miracle, and the forthcoming Eyewitness to America: Virginia WPA Slave Narratives. She has appeared on several television and radio programs, including BBC Radio, PBS’sHistory Detectives, and Fox 5 news in Washington, D.C. Ms. Bah has lectured throughout the East Coast and is a popular speaker at the Alexandria Black History Museum.

The Alexandria Black History Museum is located in the heart of the Parker-Gray Historic District in Alexandria, and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

365 - Snow on my mind

I'd really like some snow!

What I found annoying, lately

What has irked me  lately ---

My neighbor - for parking on my leaf pile so they couldn't be collected by the city and I had to bag them.

Another neighbor who thinks it's fun(ny)  to honk the horn hello and goodbye to their child EVERY time they come and go from their home.

The garbage men - for always tossing my trash can in the middle of my driveway after they have emptied it.  Can't they put it back on the curb where I leave it?

People that don't use their blinkers - this is always a pet peeve of mine.

The television - for the LOUD commercials and the barely audible programs.  (I'm old!)

My kids for continually bending all the teaspoons (they don't know their own strength) dishing out ice cream. We have ice cream scoops for that!

The weather - make up your mind - hot or cold, but this switching on a day to day basis is driving me batty!
