For Immediate Release: February 16, 2013

Early Spring 2013 Learn to Swim Aquatic Classes – Registration Opens February 20 for City Residents

In response to the scheduled closing of the Chinquapin Park Recreation Center in May for facility improvements, the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities is offering early spring Learn to Swim classes. Registration for early spring classes opens at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, February 20 for City residents and Friday, March 1 for nonresidents. Summer classes will be available with the release of the Spring & Summer 2013 RPCA Program Guide on March 1. Registration opens for all other spring and summer activities on Wednesday, March 20.

Early spring 2013 Aquatic classes are held at the Chinquapin Park Recreation Center Pool. The Learn to Swim program provides opportunities for achievement and smooth transitions between levels of instruction. Activities stimulate interest, and motivate students to advance to the next level of swim instruction. Each level addresses topics such as personal safety, rescue skills, diving and diving safety. The Infant and Preschool Aquatic program for ages 6 months - 5 years is designed to let children have fun in the water while developing swimming readiness. We recommend that your child have a physical examination prior to enrollment. For assistance with program placement, call the Aquatics Staff at 703.746.5435

To view and register for class offerings, visit www.alexandriava.gov/recreation and click on the WebTrac tab at the top of the page. A print version of class offerings is available by viewing the Early Spring 2013 Learn to Swim Aquatic Classes’ program flyer.

For additional information on programs, activities, and Chinquapin Park Recreation Center facility improvements, call 703.746.4343.

Soccer Coach Needed

FROM NEIGHBORHOOD LISTSERV:

The Alexandria United is a team of 15, 16 and 17 year old players (about 20), mostly from TC Williams, who have played together for many years. They have a lot of talent; they are dedicated to showing up and playing hard; and they love to win! They compete in the Suburban Friendship League (www.sflsoccer.org). Great opportunity for a college soccer player, or lover of the game who does not have his/her own kids to coach. These players know the game and are eager to show their skills and work at an advanced level (some also play for TC Williams).
The team is in need of a coach in order to stay together and play this spring.  The season is seven games (beginning April 13) and a tournament weekend. Practices are usually held twice a week at days and times of your choosing. Recently, they have practiced at Ben Brenman field from 8:30 – 10:00pm.
Please contact asasoc1@alexandria-soccer.com to volunteer to coach. Training is available.
