‘Spring Clean-Up’ Just Around the Corner

For residents who receive the City of Alexandria’s refuse collection services, remember to clear out household clutter this spring, and place unwanted bulky trash and metal items at the curb on a Saturday designated for your neighborhood. The City is divided into four collection zones and each zone is assigned a unique Saturday date in April or May when City crews will collect items in that zone.  Metals should be separated from other items since City refuse crews will be making a special collection for these materials. Visit Alexandriava.gov/SolidWaste to view a map and find your neighborhood area for collection.

Area 2 - April 21, Saturday Collection

Area 3 – April 28, Saturday Collection

Area 4 – May 5, Saturday Collection

Leaf Mulch – Order Now for Spring Delivery

Orders are now being accepted for delivery of mulch throughout April and May.  Delivery dates and times are limited, and appointments are on a first come first served basis. A $40 delivery fee is charged for a half truck load (3 CY) or a full truck load (6 CY). Visit www.alexandriava.gov/SolidWaste.com for additional information.

Energy from Waste Facility: New Agreement Approved

The Covanta Energy Corporation which operates the ‘energy from waste’ facility in the City has agreed to lower the charge for residential refuse disposal, in exchange for a multi-year commitment of trash delivery from the City of Alexandria.  The agreement is expected to save the City millions in disposal costs. The Covanta facility generates electricity for 25,000 homes a year from trash, as a renewable fuel source, and satisfies all environmental requirements.  For more details see the topic’s docket item from the January 24th City Council Meeting.

Recycling ‘Tip of the Month’ – Keep Caps and Lids on Bottles and Jars

It may become less expensive to dispose of a ton of trash, but recycling still assures the recovery of paper, plastics, and metals that can be used again.  Even small plastic caps on soda bottles and metal lids on jars are now recycled, if they are screwed onto their containers (if loose, the small lids fall through recycling machines). Remember, putting lids back on empty salad dressing containers and ketchup bottles will help keep your recycling cart or container clean. VisitAlexandriava.gov/SolidWaste for more information.
