T.C. Drama Department Earns Five Cappies Nominations for 'The Wiz'
Alexandria, Va. – The T.C. Williams High School Drama Department's crowd-pleasing spring musical, "The Wiz," received five nominations in The Cappies 2013 awards for area student theater. Congratulations to the following outstanding performers on their Cappies nominations:
·         The T.C. Williams Pit Orchestra, nominated for Orchestra
·         Student Director Sarah Laane, nominated for Creativity
·         Ados McKinney, nominated for Male Dancer
·         Barbara Peisch, nominated for Comic Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Addeperle
·         Kamen Wilkes, nominated for Comic Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of the Lion
The Cappies (Critics and Awards Program), an international program with 17 U.S. and Canadian locations, showcases student performances, along with reviews by student critics.  T.C.'s nominations are the most the school has received for a production in the nine years that T.C. Williams drama teachers Leslie A. Jones, who served as the show's executive director, and Hope E. Bachman-Miller, who served as executive producer and technical director, have headed the Drama Department.
"Everyone involved with this production was on the same page,” Jones said.  “The production team had a clear vision and each one of us used our expertise to make this show a success. When we cast this show, we realized early on that we had a strong group of students who would give it their all for this production.
“The running crew and pit orchestra proved the icing on the cake. They were so committed and wanted to do their part to help make this production successful, that we all gelled as a cohesive unit," Jones said. "What we all did in that auditorium in April was something special, and I will cherish that feeling for years to come."
Awards will be presented at the Cappies Gala, to be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The event is open to the public, but seating will be limited. For ticket information, contact Jones
