Careers/Volunteerism

Volunteers Needed to Help Build New PlaygroundParticipate in a once in a lifetime community experience on September 13 with the Washington Capitals, So Kids Can, KABOOM! and the Alexandria Redevelopment Housing Authority (ARHA) and help build a new playground at Hopkins-Tancil Court in Old Town. Join as an individual or come with an entire team. One hundred volunteers are needed and all must be pre-registered.

ACPS Collecting School SuppliesACPS is collecting donations of school supplies that will be distributed to students during the Get Engaged Family Night on August 29 at T.C. Williams High School. Complete lists of needed supplies are available online. Donations can be dropped off beginning August 9.

Paid Internships Plus Training for YouthYear Up is recruiting for its competitive year-long program that provides youth up to $260 per week while learning technical, financial and professional skills. Participants are placed in six-month corporate internships with Fortune 500 companies. Anyone 18-24 with a high school diploma or a GED is eligible to apply.

Nominate a Youth AmbassadorOver 6.7 million young people in the United States are disconnected from education and employment. The Youth Leadership Institute is looking for youth ages 16-24 who are disconnected and want to share their experiences and ideas for creating solutions. The deadline for applications/nominations is August 13.

Support the Creation of a Presidential Youth Councilcampaign is underway to establish a Presidential Youth Council comprised of young Americans ages 16-24 to advise the Presidents on the perspectives of youth, offer suggestions on how to make federally funded youth programs more efficient and effective, and to create shared recommendations on issues.

The KIDS COUNT Infographics ChallengeInfographics use visual representations that tell a story. They come in all shapes and sizes, convey complex information quickly, and range from whimsical to intensely serious. The Challenge asks young people (13-21) and adults to present the 2012 KIDS COUNT data that matter most to them.

Titan Head Football Coach ReturnsThe Connection featured an inspiring profile of T.C. Williams Titans’ Head Football Coach Dennis Randolph, returning for the 2012-13 season after beating cancer.

Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria (SAPCA) NewsletterThe August edition of the SAPCA newsletter highlights a meeting between SAPCA members and a delegation from the Philippines with an interest in creating a coalition in their hometowns.

Alexandria Campaign on Adolescent Pregnancy (ACAP) eNewsletterThe August edition of the ACAP newsletter discusses research that suggests teen have little awareness of the possible consequences of sexting.

Robert Wood Johnson Invites Applications for New Connections Midcareer Consultant ProgramNew Connections is a career development program for midcareer consultants from historically disadvantaged and underrepresented communities. The foundation will award up to three Midcareer Consultant grants of up to $100,000 for a twelve-month period to address program priorities that include childhood obesity, healthcare coverage, human capital, public health, healthcare/quality/equality, and vulnerable populations.
